4 great outdoor family activities to try this summer

Oh, summer. The very word conjures up images of sitting outside in the breeze, sipping a glass of cold lemonade, relaxing at the beach, and barbecuing with family and friends. It’s hot, the kids are out of school, and there are tons of ways to learn new things, make memories, and have fun! If you want to make the most of summer and try different family activities this year, check out this list for summer fun.

1. Go for a swim

Swimming is probably the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind when summer arrives. There’s nothing like a cool, refreshing breeze off the water. Unfortunately, not everyone lives near water or even within driving distance. In that case, it’s probably a good idea to think about putting in a pool! Splashing around and playing in the water is the perfect summer activity to beat the heat and have fun with the family. If you want to go the traditional route, look for pool contractors in Houston or wherever you live! There are pool options for many property sizes and budgets. If you don’t have a lot of land or are on a very tight budget, above ground pools and even large inflatable pools are available. You can still stay cool and have fun at a fraction of the price. Add pool noodles, toys and games – Marco Polo, anyone? – and you’ll be having fun in no time.

2. Plant a garden

Whether you’re an expert gardener or a curious beginner, planting and tending a garden is one of the most rewarding summer activities. It’s very easy to gauge your progress as your garden grows, and you can eat the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor! Cucumbers, peppers and squash are just a few examples of vegetables that will thrive in your summer garden. Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries thrive in the summer and are a great addition to seasonal desserts, and they’re healthy too. Cook these veggies or bake a pie with the berries, kids will love being part of the process from start to finish. Gardening is a great way to teach children responsibility and patience. they can easily see (and eat!) the products of their hard work.

3. Have a picnic

Gather your family and friends, venture to a local park, the beach or even your backyard and have a picnic! Ask everyone to make their favorite summer dish and bring it out for everyone to share, or get creative and have everyone make something new. Search for summer recipes and cook! If you did activity number two and planted a garden, add some of the yields to your picnic food; truly fresh produce in your kitchen is sure to wow your friends and family.

Lawn games are also a picnic staple; try your hand at pétanque, Kadima (beach ball), cornhole, frisbee, Can Jam and many more. A water balloon is a fun (and hilarious) way to cool everyone down if it’s hot!

4. Take a hike

Summer is the perfect time to get out with the family and explore nature. Try walking local trails, strolling along the beach, or hiking up a nearby mountain. Regardless of your location, the natural world has a lot to offer when it comes to family fun. Pack binoculars and try to identify different birds, collect pretty seashells and beach glass, or look for signs of unusual wildlife. Wherever you explore, be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Nothing ruins a hike faster than dehydration and sunburn.

Get out with your family this summer and beat the heat! There is so much natural beauty to enjoy. Whatever activity you choose – swimming, hiking, picnicking, gardening or otherwise – you’re sure to create great memories with your family and friends.
