INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — May is finally here! If you’re looking for family fun, you’ll find it in the next few 500 Festival events and activities.
OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon
Things really kick into high gear on Saturday with the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. Head downtown starting at 7:30 a.m. to watch 20,000 joggers, runners, walkers and wheelchair participants as they take on the 13.1-mile Indy Mini, which includes a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kati Baumgartner with Indianapolis Moms suggests bringing the whole family to the event to help cheer on attendees.
“Even if you don’t run the race, it’s such a cool experience. Wave with your family,” Baumgartner said. “When I ran the race several years ago, that’s the only thing that kept me going – the community that cheered you on.”
Salesforce and JPMorgan Chase 500 Festival Children’s Day
The afternoon of May 15 is dedicated to children! From noon to 4 p.m., kids can enjoy the state’s largest free outdoor festival just for kids. The festival in downtown Indy will feature educational and interactive exhibits, as well as a drumming workshop, Bollywood-style dancing and mini-car races.
If your little one loves to run, sign them up for 500 Festival Rookie Run which takes place during the children’s day. The event is open to children from 3 to 10 years old. All participants will receive a gift bag, a runner’s bib and a medal.
“They say it’s a non-competitive race, don’t they? They run the race, everyone wins medals,” Baumgartner said.
AES 500 Festival Parade
Everyone loves a parade, and what’s better than one parade on the eve of the Indianapolis 500?
More than 200,000 people are expected to take to the streets of the city center on May 28 to enjoy the parade floats, balloons, celebrity appearances and of course the 33 drivers competing.
Tickets for the parade will go on sale soon.
