It’s that time of year – school is almost out and summer is coming! It means good weather and a chance to take some well-deserved time with the family. Fortunately, Fort Hood is geographically well located in central Texas, close to many activities and adventure opportunities.
Staying local and looking for something to keep the kids busy this summer? Consult Children and Youth Services. They opened two summer camps for children this summer – one for school-based aged care and one for youth services, offering fun activities and new experiences. Both are open for registration now and run from May 31 to August 12. Stop by to see them on the first floor of the Shoemaker Center or visit their website at https://hood.armymwr.com/programs/cys-services. There are also great hikes in the area including Dana Peak and Chalk Ridge Falls, and activities at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area including fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, hiking, mountain biking, camping and horseback riding. You can even rent a chalet at BLORA!
Want to get away from the station for a day? Pack a picnic and head to Zilker Park in Austin, perhaps visit a museum, then watch the bats as they leave the Congress Street Bridge at sunset to search for food. You can also catch a baseball game at Round Rock and cheer on the Round Rock Express. Or you can head north to Waco and visit the Cameron Park Zoo, Mammoth National Monument, Texas Rangers Museum, Dr. Pepper Museum, or Mayborn Museum Complex. Austin and Waco are only about an hour from Fort Hood!
Ok to go a little further? Head north and check out the Stockyards in Fort Worth, or head south to San Antonio to experience the River Walk, the Alamo or maybe have fun at Fiesta Texas, Sea World or Schlitterbahn. Whatever you decide to do, remember to do it safely! It’s starting to get hot, so drink plenty of water and be sure to wear sunscreen and insect repellent. Take a buddy with you and be sure to let someone know where you are going.
There are tons of things to do no matter which direction you decide to go. Either way, get out there and have a fun adventure with your family and friends, relax and create great memories this summer!
