The Massey and Area Agricultural Society has been a hub of late-summer entertainment for families in the area for over a century. This year will be no exception, unlike last year when the show was canceled due to COVID.

The chairman of the board of the fair, Brian Channon, and the members of the board of directors are pulling out all the stops in the summer of 2021, it’s summer 2021 at the fairgrounds this year.

The activities will begin on July 1 with a gigantic fireworks display starting at 10 p.m. the fireworks are organized through a partnership with the city, the Sables-Spanish River Fire Department and the Massey Agricultural Society. The fairgrounds will open for vehicles on Imperial Street at 9 p.m.

All participants must stay in their vehicles and follow COVID-19 rules. The fireworks were originally scheduled for New Year’s Eve; However, with the COVID restrictions, the New Years Eve event has been canceled and postponed.

Channon said: “This event is sponsored by the Massey Agricultural Society and is the fireworks we bought for New Years Eve, but we couldn’t let them down. We certainly hope residents from across the Township will join us for the evening.

Another event that runs throughout the summer from July 3rd is a weekly farmers / flea market.

The market with a farmer’s market and a flea market will take place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a large area with picnic benches for customers. Ample free parking is available.

With the many artisans in the area and a large community of market gardeners, there will likely be a choice of fresh vegetables as the season progresses, along with homemade pastries and a variety of other artisanal products and wares.

A drive-in will take place on July 11. The film has yet to be announced. For mountain bikers who like to get dirty and spectators who love the action of muddy bogs, there will be a ‘Redneck Mud Bog this summer at the fairgrounds. The date of this event has not yet been announced.

Channon calls these July activities a “warm-up” for the Massey Fair. The Massey Fair has been an annual event since 1907 and is known as the largest rural fair on the North Shore. Last year’s show was canceled due to COVID-19.

In a social media review, Channon said: “The board is determined to boost morale in these ‘dark times’… We will do our best to provide a safe atmosphere and a lot of fun! It will not look like past fairs…. But it should be as much fun as it ever has been! The plans are fluid and will be adapted if necessary.

The dates of the fair are from August 27 to 29.
