Newton Fest guarantees Damon Dotson, a free pool party, family activities and more June 9-11

April 4—For three consecutive days, residents and visitors can celebrate all that makes Newton such a great community to live in.

Newton Fest returns with a full weekend of special events and family activities June 9-11. Festivities will take place throughout the city and will be organized by the city, local businesses and other organizations in conjunction with Newton Fest, such as free concerts, tournament sports, a car show and sales events by retail.

Damon Dotson and his full band will take the stage on June 11 as the headliner of Newton Fest. Dotson is a singer-songwriter from Des Moines who has released four original albums and played countless shows throughout the Midwest. He also opened for artists like BB King, Willie Nelson and The Beach Boys.

Opus Taylor, a six-member band specializing in blues and classic rock, will perform June 9 as part of Newton Fest and the Maytag Bowl Summer Concert Series. Opus Taylor knows how to get the crowd working and put people on their feet to enjoy an evening of fun entertainment.

THURSDAY JUNE 9

— DMACC’s Chalk the Walk is a free event at 6 p.m. at Maytag Park. More details to come.

FRIDAY JUNE 10

—Discover the Newton YMCA is a one-day event at 1701 S. Eighth Ave. E. installation. More details to come.

—Gezellig Brewing Company’s Cheers to Three Years begins at 1 p.m. in the dining room at 403 W. Fourth St. N. in Legacy Plaza. The award-winning microbrewery invites guests to celebrate its third anniversary. The party continues until June 11.

—Food trucks will be available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in front of Gezellig Brewing Company. Kulinary Khaos, Magoo’s Pizza, Papa Wolfie’s BBQ and El Meson Taco Shack will be serving their signature dishes. Food trucks will also be available on June 11.

—The Newton Alumni Association all-class meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight at Building 20, Legacy Plaza. The class reunion entrance fee is $5 per person. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks support the Newton Chapter of Dollars for Scholars.

—Thunder Nites will take place from 6-10 p.m. in downtown Newton. More details to come.

— The free community pool party is from 7-9 p.m. in the Maytag Pool. Sponsored by Advantage Credit Union, the pool party is a fun family night for everyone. Concession sales will be made available.

SATURDAY JUNE 11

—The 2022 Newton YMCA Pickleball Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Aurora Park. The round-robin competition has medals for first, second, and third place. Registration must be completed by June 4.

— Morning Yoga in the Park will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Maytag Park. The session will be free. More details to come.

—The Newton Alumni Brunch and Newton High School Hall of Fame Induction will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the high school. Brunch cost is $15 and can be purchased online, at the meeting the night before, or at brunch. Reservations are preferred.

—The Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Car Show returns from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Newton. The show is for all enthusiasts. Enter a car for a chance to win the coveted “Best of Show” trophy or “People’s Choice” award. Other trophies will be distributed for different classes.

—The Newton Main Street Saturday Downtown Farmers’ Market will begin at 10 a.m. in the downtown area. More details to come.

—Destination Downtown Newton Alliance’s Wine Walk throwback event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the downtown area. More details to come.

—Iowa Brewery Running Series Run for Beer 5K will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Gezellig Brewing Company. The fun race starts and ends at the bar. Competitors are encouraged to run, walk or jog. – The Newton Fire and Police Department Safety Fest is a free event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maytag Park. More details to come.

—Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Kids Crafts and Story Walk is a free event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Maytag Park West Shelter. Crafts for kids include seed necklaces and straw rockets.

—Newton Fest Fun Zone with inflatables and laser tag is a free event from noon to 4 p.m. in Maytag Park. Four inflatable structures will be available.

— The Newton Fest Magic Show will take place at 1 p.m. in the Maytag Bowl at Maytag Park. More details to come.

—The Newton Fest Dodgeball tournament will take place at 3 p.m. on the tennis courts at Maytag Park. More details to come.

— The Newton Alumni Association’s Jack Chadwick Golf Tournament will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Westwood Golf Course. Call 641-792-3087 to reserve a spot. Teams of four are $300, otherwise the cost is $75 per person to be paid on the day of the event.

—Iowa Speedway’s ARCA Menards Series race begins at 8 p.m. on the racetrack at 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive. Grandstand tickets start at $19. Children 12 and under enter free.
