A single-family home was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon in Sahtlam, near Duncan.

No one was injured in the blaze, Sahtlam Fire Chief Randy Busch said.

Firefighters were called when a resident of the house was in the laundry room and spotted a fire running along the walls and front of the house, Busch said.

By that time, it was likely that the fire had passed through the walls to the roof, he said.

“He got out of there and by the time we got to the scene the house was fully involved. “

Because Sahtlam does not have a water system to fight the blaze, the water needed to fight the blaze was trucked in on tenders to put out the blaze, Busch said.

Firefighters focused on saving nearby buildings and vehicles and preventing the fire from spreading to the property, he said.

An excavator was brought into the basement to move the debris out of the way. “There is nothing left standing at this point.”

He couldn’t say Monday night what caused the fire.

Lake Cowichan, Crofton and Duncan Fire Departments assisted in fighting the blaze. Residents of the house have family and friends to help them out, Busch said.
