El Paso police said Philip Daniel Mills poured gasoline from a weedkiller on a living room sofa around 11:30 p.m., set it on fire with a rag and then walked out, KTSM reported.

“(Mills) waited outside the residence with large stones in their hands in case his brother and mother managed to get out of the burning residence,” investigators said.

Mills then fled the area.

Firefighters responded to the area and found Mills’ mother, Florence Annette Mills, 82, coming out of the house with burns. She was taken to hospital where she is in critical condition.

Inside the house, they found Brother Paul Aaron Mills, 54, in the living room. He was taken to hospital where he died of severe burns.

An officer on patrol saw Philip Mills running around the area. He told investigators his house was on fire, KVIA reported.

Investigators said he later told them he started the fire to rid the house of the evil. Before lighting the fire, he broke a television and threatened to set the house on fire. Investigators told Mills her mother was injured and her brother died from the fire.

“(Mills) then laughed and informed investigators that he was shocked his mother and brother did not perish and called it a ‘failed attempt’,” detectives said.

Mills was arrested and charged with capital murder and arson.
