The Addams Family The franchise has spawned a total of four feature films to date, but which movie ranks as the best? The famous creepy and wacky clan that is the Addams Family is the brainchild of cartoonist Charles Addams and debuted in the late 1930s in a series of one-panel cartoons published in The New Yorker. Addams envisioned his namesake creations as a satirical rendition of the all-American ideal family of the 20th century – respectably rich and loving offspring but fascinated by the macabre and delightfully oblivious to their own strangeness.
Since their cartoon debut, the Addams Family has been the subject of several TV shows and animated series, a TV movie, a Broadway musical, and (bizarrely) the best-selling pinball machine of all time. . The Addams Family franchising is also constantly evolving; Not only will MGM’s recent animated reboot have a sequel slated for October 2021, director Tim Burton is also teaming up with Netflix to create a television series focused on Wednesday Addams – aptly titled. Wednesday – which is expected to star Jenna Ortega in the title role, as well as Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones as her parents Gomez Addams and Morticia Addams.
Before Wednesday and MGM’s animated sequel are coming, let’s take a look back at each ongoing feature in The Addams Family franchise ranked from worst to best.
Addams Family Reunion (1998)
According to director Dave Payne, Addams Family Reunion was meant to be an original reinvention of the titular family, but producers Saban stepped in and insisted on a more child-focused scam from the Addams Family movies and TV shows that came before it.
The result is a pale direct imitation on video of the old Addams Family properties that suffer from B movie production values and sadly ranks as the worst movie in the franchise. Addams Family Reunion however has a saving grace in the form of Tim Curry, who brings his usual sparkle and comedic timing to the table as Gomez.
The Addams Family (2019)
MGM 2019 animated restart from The Addams Family has plenty to do, including a great voice cast – which features talents like Charlize Theron and Oscar Isaac as Morticia and Gomez – as well as top-notch animation from Cinesite and Nitrogen Studios.
What the film lacks, sadly, is what makes the Mad titular family so wonderful – and that’s their signature dark humor. Its overly sweet tone and unnecessary origin story mean The Addams Family 2019 isn’t the biggest movie, but maybe its next sequel (The Addams Family 2) can improve its flaws.
The Addams Family (1991)
The first released in theaters Addams Family the film remains one of the best series to date. The 1991 version of The Addams Family has successfully reintroduced the Creepy Clan to a whole new generation and features a perfectly performed ensemble that includes Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia playing the role of Morticia and Gomez, alongside a wonderfully weird Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester and unmoved Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams. The Addams Family 1991 does have its flaws, however – mostly around its slim plot and forgettable villain – meaning it fails to top this ranking.
Addams Family Values (1993)
It may have bombed at the box office, but Addams Family Values is one of those rare suites that surpasses its predecessor in quality. The film reunites most of the original cast from the 1991 film (alongside director Barry Sonnenfeld), but with the added bonus of a hilarious Joan Cusack as a maniacal serial killer into whose clutches Uncle Fester falls.
Not only did the sequel dubbed with black humor, it also kicked off a delightfully subversive subplot that saw Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams carry out a coup against a summer camp. For these reasons and more Values ranks among the best Addams Family movie.
