It can be difficult to find the right movies to watch with the whole family together – some things are just too uncomfortable to watch together, some are not suitable for children, some have far too many innuendos, and others may to be best appreciated alone. So how do you pick a movie for a family movie night?
We’ve brought you some of our favorite family movies on Netflix that can easily be enjoyed by any member of the family. Press play and see for yourself!
Based on the eponymous novel by Jack London, White Fang follows the story of a wolfdog, as it passes through three different owners. The story is timeless, and while the film doesn’t have the brutality of the OG novel, it brings a different twist to the presentation that makes it very watchable.
Breathtaking visuals and the pooch perspective add authenticity to the film. With voices from Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Paul Giamatti, among others, White Fang is a wonderful animation of the classic tale.
The little Prince
Did you read the 1943 short story The little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry? Otherwise, get the children together and read to them. It’s short, and it will be useful for the preparation of the film. Much like the original source, the film is heartfelt, sane, and touching. In the film, there is an extra layer of storytelling and perspective.
In the book, we only see the adventures of the little prince and the narrator; in the film, this narrator is an old man. Seen as eccentric by other residents, he befriends his new neighbor, a little girl whose life and days have been planned by her mother. This is until the story of the little prince piques his interest and it deviates from the schedule.
Her friendship with the old man is just the start of a bigger adventure. The little Prince teaches us the importance of creativity, letting go and daring to be different.
The sky is pink
With Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Suresh Saraf, The sky is pink tells the story of Aisha Chaudhary, who suffered from severe combined immunodeficiency and pulmonary fibrosis. It is the adaptation of a true story of Aisha’s illness, of her parents’ life, of their marital challenges, among others.
The movie has the most heartbreaking and heartwarming gestures all put together. It touches on various themes – death, bereavement, motherhood, companionship, marriage – which can also serve as a sequence for having these conversations with your family. In the end, this is bound to make you grateful for your family. That’s what makes it a family movie.
Ralph breaks the internet
Following Ralph’s wreck is quite entertaining. The fun begins with the premise itself: When Ralph and his best friend Vanellope decide to save the arcade game Sugar Rush, they must navigate the mind-boggling world of the internet. What follows their misadventures is a test of their friendship. But as they say, it’s the journey, not the destination.
Every stop on this journey is hilarious and scary. It’s also satirical in that we touch on elements of digital culture where humor can be hard to find. We see them making fun of memes, trolls, viral videos… and delivering tons of Easter eggs and jokes to us in the process. The visuals are also a delight – from the colorful arcade to the busy world inside the internet.
All of this supported by simple lessons for the children in the family. This is what makes Ralph breaks the internet the ultimate family movie.
